Cookie's unforgettable journey of rescue

I recently had an experience that really stuck with me, and I wanted to share it. During a trip to Cyprus, I came across a stray dog that
I just couldn’t ignore. It felt like something out of a movie—this sweet dog came running up to me, tail wagging and eyes full of hope.
It was obvious she had been on her own for a while, and the idea of her being alone broke my heart. I decided to name her Cookie,
and from that moment, she became more than just a stray.

There were strict rules at our hotel about pets, but I knew I couldn’t leave Cookie out there, especially in her condition. She looked thin, tired, and was clearly in need of help. I spent that afternoon trying to figure out what I could do for her. After some calls and a few emails, I got in touch with local animal shelters. Luckily, we were able to find her a temporary place to stay, but it wasn’t easy to walk away when
my trip came to an end. Even though I knew she was in good hands, it didn’t stop me from feeling an emotional pull. It was as if I had made a promise to her that I wasn’t quite ready to break.

Over the next few months, I found myself thinking about Cookie constantly. I checked in regularly with the shelter, and with each update,

I was relieved to hear she was recovering well. When she was finally healthy enough to travel, I made the decision to bring her to Istanbul. That process was more nerve-wracking than I expected. Cookie had to travel in the plane's cargo hold, and I was anxious the entire time, worried about how she’d handle the journey.

But once she arrived in Istanbul and I saw her again, all that worry disappeared. Cookie recognized me right away, and it felt like everything had come full circle. But as much as I had grown attached to her, I knew that I couldn’t provide the full-time care she needed. After some searching, I found a loving family who was eager to take her in. They had the space, time, and energy to give her the life
that would truly make her happy.

Letting her go was one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do, but I knew it was the right decision. Seeing Cookie settle into her new home, with a family that adored her, reassured me that I had done the best thing for her. This entire experience taught me so much about compassion, responsibility, and the importance of stepping in when others—whether human or animal—need help.

Looking back, I realize that what started as a chance encounter ended up being a life-changing moment for both of us. It reminded me that the most fulfilling moments in life often come from helping others, even when it’s challenging. There’s a certain beauty in doing something for someone who can’t repay you, in knowing that your small act of kindness can have a lasting impact.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned from this experience, it’s that we all have the power to make a difference, even in small ways. So, if you ever find yourself in a position to help—whether it’s a person or an animal—don’t hesitate. You might just change a life, and who knows,
it might end up changing yours too.
